Kitchen appliances I couldn’t live without

I used to think having lots of different kitchen appliances was filling up your kitchen with clutter. Now I have multiple appliances and use them regularly.

If you follow me on IG, you might now that our gas started playing up when just when it got cold. Our gas supplies out heating, hot water, and the range cooker and hob. We can live without heating for a little while, but cooking and food is another matter entirely.

I’ll just say I’m very glad to have changed my mind about these appliances, as goodness knows what we would have been eating while the gas wasn’t working.

Kitchen appliances I can’t live without

Slow cooker

You can pretty much adapt any recipe to be cooked in a slow cooker, which is why I love it so much. I’ve made a variety of meals like lasagna, curry, and stew, and have even made things like apple crumble. There are loads of recipes for the slow cooker, and I have to say meat definitely tastes better after being cooked in a slow cooker. You can also cook pasta.

Another plus I love is I can throw a load of different ingredients in just before bed, and have it cook on a low heat overnight. I often do this when I plan on sending B to work with a meal he can reheat instead of sandwiches.

Some of what I cook using the slow cooker: lasagna, spaghetti bolognese, apple crumble, soup or stew.

Grill machine

This was a Christmas present a couple of years ago, and I’m so so happy with it! I do all sorts in this too, from grilling meats – and this helps get rid of all the grease from it too – to making toasted sandwiches. There’s a lot you can cook on these too, anything you can grill normally you can grill on this!

Some of what I cook using the grill: bacon, burgers, steaks or “medallions”, sandwiches.

Steamer

I love my steamer. It was an Aldi find for £14.99 and I’m really glad we got it. Anything that can’t be cooked in the slow cooker or grill, can almost always be cooked in the steamer. I can make mash potatoes, I can cook rice, I can cook fish. You can do all this in a slow cooker or in the grill, I suppose, but I prefer knowing the rice is properly cooked and I can do that with the steamer.

Some of what I cook using the steamer: eggs, rice, fish, potatoes, vegetables.

I love all of my appliances, but these three definitely make a difference in the kitchen. Even in the summer when I don’t want to turn the range on, I know I can cook something delicious and not make the house feel like an oven itself.

Apart from the grill, they do take a little longer than normal to cook some items. Obviously a slow cooker can take anywhere from 3-4 hours to 8+ hours depending on what you are cooking, and the steamer takes a moment to get up to steaming temperature. Rice and potatoes take a while longer to steam than if they were boiled on the hob too.

It can take a little longer than using the hob and oven, but in cases where the oven or hob aren’t working it means we have options. Previously we were left without an oven after it blew itself up, but we only had a microwave and we quickly ended up eating nothing but microwave ready meals. It’s brilliantly easy and you have a hot meal in under 10 minutes usually, but it’s not really our thing and all the additives make my PCOS symptoms worse.
